Photo Hunt: Magical

Zweet at magic hour

This street scene — it’s Zweet, a sweet shop on Eagle Rock Blvd. — may not seem particularly magical at first, but look closer: it was taken during Magic Hour. The time right around sunset (and dawn too) when the sun is hovering near the horizon offers the kind of light photographers love — softer lighting and lower contrast, which lessens the risk of blown out highlights. When the sun is above the horizon, you get a warm glow, and when it is below the horizon, a cool feel. It’s really a magical time to be out and about with a camera!

  1. Great shot – I know what you mean about the light in the evening or early morning . . . sure natural light is wonderful but you don’t want it to blow your shot out!

  2. Nice shot — and wouldn’t it be a lovely cap to the day if you went into that store and the ice cream and soda were to taste great? :b

  3. That is a great time to take photos. Dad calls it the Golden Hour.
